Tirzepatide Medication in New Jersey | Mounjaro & Zepbound
It can be discouraging when efforts to manage your weight or blood sugar do not lead to the progress you expected. Hunger, appetite, metabolism, medications, and other health factors can all affect your results. For eligible patients, a weekly tirzepatide medication may provide additional support as part of a medically supervised treatment plan.
At the Weight Loss and Wellness Center, Dr. Saniea F. Majid, MD, FACS, FASMBS, DABOM, reviews your health, weight, medications, previous treatment, and goals to determine whether Mounjaro, Zepbound, or another option is appropriate. Although both brands contain tirzepatide, they are prescribed for different medical needs. If treatment is recommended, our team provides injection guidance, monitors your response and side effects, and supports your nutrition and physical activity. Care is available at our four locations – Clifton, Bridgewater, Springfield, and Rahway.

What is Tirzepatide Medication?
Tirzepatide is a prescription medication that activates two hormone pathways: glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide, or GIP, and glucagon-like peptide-1, or GLP-1. These pathways are involved in appetite, food intake, digestion, and blood sugar regulation. Tirzepatide may help reduce hunger, support earlier fullness, and lower calorie intake. It also supports glucose-dependent insulin release when blood sugar is elevated.
Mounjaro and Zepbound contain the same active ingredient but have different FDA-approved uses. Zepbound is used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for long-term weight management in eligible adults. It is also approved for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity.
Mounjaro is used with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and patients aged 10 or older with Type 2 diabetes. It is also approved to reduce major cardiovascular events in adults with Type 2 diabetes who are at high risk. The two brands should not be used together.
How Tirzepatide Supports Weight Loss
Learn how tirzepatide may support appetite, weight, or blood sugar based on the prescribed brand and treatment goal.

Who May Be a Candidate for Tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide may be considered for selected patients based on the prescribed brand and treatment goal. Dr. Majid reviews BMI, diabetes status, weight-related conditions, medication history, and overall health before recommending treatment.
Meeting these criteria does not automatically make tirzepatide appropriate. Dr. Majid also reviews any history of thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney problems, severe digestive symptoms, diabetic retinopathy, pregnancy, and planned procedures. Mounjaro may be used for Type 2 diabetes in patients aged 10 or older, while Zepbound is not approved for pediatric use. If tirzepatide is unsuitable, WLWC may discuss another medication, endoscopic treatment, bariatric surgery, or medically supervised weight management.
Health Conditions
Conditions Weight Loss May Improve
Improvement is not guaranteed and varies according to the amount of weight lost, condition severity, current treatment, and long-term follow-up. Tirzepatide does not replace ongoing medical care. Continue prescribed medications, CPAP therapy, and other treatments unless the clinician managing your condition recommends a change.
What to Expect Before and
During Tirzepatide Treatment
Tirzepatide treatment begins with a medical assessment and injection training. WLWC then monitors your response, side effects, and progress as your dose gradually increases.

Dr. Majid reviews your treatment goal to determine whether Mounjaro, Zepbound, or another medication may be appropriate. Your evaluation includes your weight, BMI, blood sugar history, weight-related conditions, current medications, previous treatment, and overall health.
Tell the WLWC team about any history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, MEN 2, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney problems, severe gastroparesis, diabetic retinopathy, or medication allergies. You should also discuss pregnancy plans, oral contraceptive use, insulin or other diabetes medications, and any upcoming surgery or procedure requiring anesthesia or deep sedation.

Tirzepatide begins at a low dose and gradually increases to reduce the likelihood of gastrointestinal side effects. The WLWC team monitors your weight, appetite, blood sugar when relevant, treatment response, hydration, and side effects.
Your dose is based on the prescribed brand, treatment goal, response, and tolerability. Do not increase, reduce, or stop the medication without speaking with your healthcare provider.
How to Take Tirzepatide
Tirzepatide is injected once weekly at any time of day, with or without food. Follow the dosing schedule provided by your healthcare professional.
For weight management, the recommended Zepbound maintenance doses are 5 mg, 10 mg, or 15 mg once weekly. For obstructive sleep apnea, the recommended maintenance dose is 10 mg or 15 mg once weekly. Mounjaro dosing depends on blood sugar response and tolerability. The maximum Mounjaro dose is 15 mg weekly for adults and 10 mg weekly for patients aged 10 to 17.
Inject tirzepatide under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm and rotate injection sites. Never share an injection pen, even if the needle has been changed.
If you miss a dose, take it within four days. If more than four days have passed, skip it and take your next dose on the regularly scheduled day. Do not take two doses within three days of each other.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Mounjaro and Zepbound?
Both medications contain tirzepatide. Zepbound is approved for long-term weight management in eligible adults and for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. Mounjaro is approved for Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk reduction in certain high-risk adults with Type 2 diabetes.
Is Mounjaro medication approved specifically for weight loss?
No. In the United States, Mounjaro is not specifically approved as a weight-loss medication. Zepbound contains the same active ingredient and is the tirzepatide brand approved for long-term weight management in eligible adults.
How much weight can you lose with Zepbound medication?
Results may vary. In a 72-week clinical trial involving adults without Type 2 diabetes, average weight reductions were 15% with 5 mg, 19.5% with 10 mg, and 20.9% with 15 mg, compared with 3.1% with placebo. These results were achieved alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity and do not predict individual outcomes.
Can Zepbound be used for obstructive sleep apnea?
Zepbound is approved to treat moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. Patients should continue other prescribed sleep apnea treatment unless their healthcare provider recommends a change.
How often is tirzepatide injected?
Mounjaro and Zepbound are injected once weekly. Try to use the medication on the same day each week. The weekly injection day may be changed as long as there are at least three days between doses.
What should I do if I miss a tirzepatide dose?
Take the missed dose within four days. If more than four days have passed, skip it and take your next dose on the regularly scheduled day. Never take two doses within three days.
Can tirzepatide be used with insulin?
Tirzepatide may be prescribed with insulin in some patients with Type 2 diabetes. However, combining them can increase the risk of low blood sugar, so the insulin dose may need adjustment. Do not mix tirzepatide and insulin in the same injection.
Can Mounjaro and Zepbound be used together?
No. Both contain tirzepatide and should not be used together. Zepbound should also not be combined with another GLP-1 receptor agonist.
Does tirzepatide affect birth control pills?
Tirzepatide may make oral hormonal contraceptives less effective. Use a non-oral contraceptive or add a barrier method for four weeks after starting treatment and for four weeks after each dose increase.
How should tirzepatide medication be stored?
Storage instructions depend on the brand and presentation supplied. Tirzepatide is generally refrigerated, protected from light, and must not be frozen. Follow the storage instructions provided with your specific pen or vial.
Does insurance cover Mounjaro or Zepbound?
Coverage depends on the medication, approved indication, insurance plan, and authorization requirements. Mounjaro and Zepbound may have different coverage rules because they are approved for different medical uses. The WLWC team can help you review available payment and financing options.
